(Logo)

Our logo has been designed as a reference to the bitmap raster, a light computer rendering process. To replace PNG or JPEG, which are heavy image formats, the logo is directly inserted into the html file as an inline code and as a vector drawing in SVG format, to be less than 0.2 MB.

(Typeface)

For all our texts (titles and body), we decided to use a single typeface named Synt, designed by the independent foundry abcdinamo. As a creative agency, we wanted to support type design instead of using a default typeface system. The use of a custom typeface has a limited cost on our website: we only used one variation of Synt (regular), meaning we only loaded one woff. file. Commonly, web design mobilizes multiple fonts and variations increasing navigation requests and loading time.

(Images)

Images are one of the biggest contributors to the weight of a website. From the start we discarded the idea of using high-res images or videos. Yet, we couldn't completely do without images to illustrate our words and projects. We made the decision to display them with a bitmap raster, meaning pixels have only two states (on & off), giving the images the distinctive feature of displaying only two colors. Images’ colors are rendered with CSS blend mode, a hard light overlay technique that gives a two-tone coloration, one coming from the background. Using this technique, we only display images under 1 MB.

(Content)

Minimizing the digital footprint of a website also requires the production and display of optimized content. Copywriting must be clear, efficient and the content must be well SEO'd to limit wasted navigation time. To further optimize time spent online and preserve our users' time, we decided to specify the reading time of our articles.

(Web development)

As an agency, we simply needed a website to showcase our work and services. We didn't want to overload it with heavy programming systems. We decided to not use frameworks (i.e., set of pre-coded documents to build websites), avoiding too many embedded coding lines that define each element showcased on a web page. Our code is specifically tailored to address our content. The only library we use is a JavaScript called JQuery that collects some of the features of our website. Due to the lack of traceability of JQuery information, we decided to host ours on our servers, ensuring that it won’t be stored on any other servers operated by major tech companies.

(Hosting)

https://ecume.studio is hosted by Infomaniak, a green server located in Switzerland and powered by hydro and renewable energy. While selecting the hosting company, it is important to look at the PUE rate, which should ideally be around 1.0. Infomaniak buys only energy-efficient technology servers, utilizes air conditioning-free ventilation techniques and reuses and recycles decommissioned servers.

To fight climate change and social injustice, we need to commit together and act now. At écume studio, we are pursuing an open-source approach. Our desire is to make collaborative dialogue and exploration a priority for change. We use materials from inspiring people who share their work publicly. And we openly share our thoughts, research and tools to build an active and free community of thinkers and makers.

Welcome to our community!
